A caravan mover, often called a caravan motor mover, is a drive system consisting of two or four electric motors driving rollers that can be engaged with the caravan tyres in order to move the caravan. They can move the van forward, backwards, turn and even rotate on the spot. This is all controlled by a simple remote control. The motors are engaged with the tyres when you need to manoeuvre the caravan and disengaged when you are towing, they are powered from your caravan leisure battery.

Yes, there are models designed specifically for single axle and twin axle caravans. In general a single axle caravan can be rotated on the spot whereas a twin axle van cannot.

The system controlling the motors on a single axle van can drive one wheel forward and one wheel backwards thus spinning the caravan around on the spot. The drive control system on a twin axle van does not allow this as the non-driven wheels will scrub, instead they will allow as tight a turn as possible.

There are many variations on the guarantees and warranties offered by manufacturers and it is worth considering the differences as these can affect the cost of any repairs in the future. At one end of the scale you have comprehensive cover like that from Powrtouch who offer a full 5 year no-quibble parts and labour guarantee - any problem will be rectified at no cost to the owner - at the other end of the scale some manufacturers offer 2 year parts only cover, so whilst your mover is covered you will have to cover the labour charge - a typical call out from a local engineer will cost between £60 to £100.

For the ultimate manoeuvrability, extra power and control four wheel drive (4WD) models are the best choice for twin axle vans. This does mean four motors instead of two and hence they are more expensive.

Cross actuation is the ability to simultaneously engage the motors with the tyres on both sides of the caravan from one side. This is essential if you need to park the caravan close against a wall for example. Without cross actuation you must engage or disengage each drive roller independently.

On some models the mover's drive rollers are engaging and disengaging electrically. You control the whole process from the remote. Some manual motor movers can be upgraded to electric actuation.

No, most manufacturers have a 'soft start' feature. This gently accelerates the motors eliminating any nasty jolts. This aids positioning and is kinder to your caravan and its tyres.

All movers will automatically hold the caravan still when all controls are released. Most mover will hold on a 25% gradient. (That's a 1 in 4 hill in old money.)

Motor movers do draw a significant amount of power from the leisure battery, particularly when on gradients or rough terrain. We always recommend upgrading the battery to at least 110Ah just for your peace of mind. If you are thinking of upgrading you battery, we always carry new 110Ah units on out vans.

Yes, there are chain driven movers and movers with integrated gear box. Chain drive is usually only found on the budget models, whilst cheaper to manufacture these can be susceptible to chain stretching and tight links. Integrated gear boxes do provide a smoother power deliver and are more reliable, integrated gear boxes are used by virtually all mid to high end caravan movers.

Virtually all caravan movers now have alloy or steel rollers which last almost indefinitely. Some older models did use grit rollers which were made from resin have been known to crack after only 12-18 months requiring replacement of the whole roller and mounting.
