About Resound…

Resound is an aid for the handicapped in the form of a computer program developed with a view to enhancing the communicative abilities of persons with severe problems in expressing themselves and/or difficulties with writing, e.g. aphasia or dyslexia.

Resound is based on the resources and problems of the handicapped person by forming an individual, communicative environment consisting of a carefully adjusted vocabulary with a selected linguistic, cognitive, visual, auditory and motoric functionality.

Resound can be used for preparing communication, for writing letters and documents and for training linguistic skills.

Resound and aphasia

The language consists of words, whi-ch in turn can denote objects, actions or characteristics, but behind the words the-re is a comprehensive system of auditory, conceptual and situational connections. Aphasia is a disorder of this logic and ces far beyond the spoken and written language.

Resound takes these problems seri-ously into consideration, primarily by linking the concepts to situational, associative and functional connections, and by using a logic of selection, from general to specific. Order special brochure about Resound and aphasia.

Pictures, sound, writing

With Resound it is possible for the user, solely by using the miniature pictures - also known as icons - to build up, have pronounced and have printed single words, sentences and complete documents.

The program at present contains more than 1000 carefully selected words. Nouns are the largest group with about 700 words. In addition, there are about 100 verbs, 100 adjectives and a number of particles. The following are small examples of how the understanding of words and concepts is strengthened thro-ugh Resound.

  • Nouns are drawings with a strong outline – which defines and underli-nes the concept more effectively than photos.
  • Verbs are animated, and can thus be understood as a word class expres-sing an action.
  • Adjectives are arranged in pairs to indicate that this is a word class expressing characteristics through opposites or graduation.

Sound is used in direct communicati-on, and also acts as an auditory feedback for the chosen words. This can also be used in language training. Writing is used to support the pictures.

The Resound frame consists of several areas. At the top-left corner you can select one of the main areas, which includes frequently used words. If a word is marked, the text of the word will be shown. At the bottom-lower writing field you can place the icons from the key pictures and construct a sentence. Right over to the left you can mark the purpose of the sentence. After that, the sentences can be read, pronounced, edited and printed.

The logical structure

The selection of words in Resound is based on the fact that words of everyday life exist in one or more environmental context. Thus we use specific words depending on where we are, in the library or in our own kitchen.

Starting from one of the main environments (the house, the town, the dictionary, "my own words" the user quickly works his way through to one of the more than 100 specific environments.

If for instance you go through the house to the kitchen, you’ll find words as; sink, refrigerator, cooking and cookbook. If you open the kitchen cupboard, you’ll find the things that are placed in the kitchen cupboard, but also other words that are connected to these things e.g.: to drink, to taste, to get, sour, sweet, to divide, full, empty, new, old.
