The .500 Rule has already forced one team to alter its schedule this year.

If Shachner gets by 14 without trouble, we could easily be in for the round of the championship.

BYU's Daniel Summerhays shot 60 here last October at the Golfweek/Ping Preview. And he didn't miss his birdie putt on 18 by much.

Lovemark has made the cut in two PGATour events, most recently at January's Buick Invitational where hetied for 39th after an opening-round 66. Last year, he tied for 54th atthe Cialis Western Open.

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Florida State’s Matthew Savage hit his bunkershot on No. 9 at Golden Horseshoe Golf Club, his final hole of today'sopening round of the NCAA Championship, to about 3 feet, then tapped infor a 3-under 67. He is currently the leader in the clubhouse withMinnesota’s Bronson LaCassie, who missed a 20-footer on 18 that wouldhave given him the outright lead.

TEMPE, Ariz. – U-C … L-A! U-C … L-A! U-C … L-A!

Last year, I wore the Bruin head and was very comfortable in selecting UCLA to win the NCAA Championship. They did not.

Tostart the season, again, I selected UCLA to win and they didn’t playwell during the fall season. But they finally mined some of theirtalent and won at Southern Highlands. Today, Erik Flores decided it wastime to play some golf. And if Flores has found his game we could havea clear favorite this postseason.

A look a round the nation after day one of regional play:

West
• Charlie Beljan will make a great pro.
• BYU is not leading? I am shocked they didn’t have more red out there today. That will change.
• Wake Forest was three shots better than Pennsylvania.
• How low can they go? The ASU Thunderbird tournament record is 43 under par.
• What will South Carolina and New Mexico do in Round 2?

Central
• How about Golfweek’sPGA Tour writer stepping into the college world? Great piece on WesternIllinois, Jeff. No doubt the Leathernecks are a true Cinderella incollege golf the last couple of seasons.
• Mark Crabtree: Coach of the Year? Have to consider it, don’t you?
• Asher, great pick there with the Badgers … so far!
•Biggest surprise has to be Michigan State. The Spartans have a 49-1-1head-to-head record in their last four starts. They will play better onFriday.
• Round 2 is going to be a big round for Jay Seawell and the Crimson Tide.

East
• Was that Penn State in the top 10?
• Look for Old Dominion to claw back into the top 18 and have a shot in the final round. All the 8-ball wants is a shot.
•Is Georgia Tech for real? I mean, can the Jackets win it all? What asurprise that would be after the fall season and we did not expect thissquad to be where it is.
• Did you know the Georgia Bulldogs have never won a regional tournament?
• Keegan Bradley is pretty good.

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. – Today is the first round of the men’s CentralRegional at Rich Harvest Farms. I am 45 miles west of Chicago and thewind is ferocious. We have seen wind gusts at 30 mph and they seem tobe getting stronger.

As Lance is asking score keepers to checktheir red markers in Tempe, I’m asking the calligraphers to check theirsupply on black markers. It’s a bogey, double bogey, triple bogey, andcough, cough, quad bogey!

Oklahoma State coach Mike McGraw hasall of his Cowboys here for the regional, and the team is on a roll.Posey, Martin, Leon, Leon, and Moore won the Maxwell a week ago and theBig XII Championship before that.

It will be interesting to see if the Cowboys can stay hot with a win here.

I still think the guys in the Red Pants (Lamar will surprise all).

TEMPE, Ariz. – The bird-ies are ready to fly. Or fall, I should say.

Aftertalking to many coaches and players, I suggest the calligrapher workingthe scoreboard might double-check his supply of red markers. Scores areexpected to be low and many involved feel it will take an under-pareffort to finish in the top 10.

The rough is not as high as itwas when Arizona State hosted the Thunderbird Invitational last monthand the scores were good then with nine teams below par. They tried tolet the rough grow, but had some problems and had to cut back.

Playgets underway at 6:30 a.m. to help avoid the expected heat here in thedesert. With low scoring expected, I am predicting your first roundleader to be the BYU Cougars.

Let the regionals begin.

MESA, Ariz. – These guys are good.Seems like I have heard that somewhere before. After hanging out atLongbow Golf Club, site of this year’s National Junior College AthleticAssociation Championship, that’s what everyone was telling me. And Ithink they are right.

Nineteen players broke par on the par-71,7,003-yard layout in extremely warm conditions. Leading the way wasBrian Mills of McClennan Community College in McLennan, Texas. Millsrecorded eight birdies to just one bogey for his 7-under 64.

Ialso got to meet a living legend – Delnor Poss. He has been the men’sgolf coach at Midland College for the past 30 seasons and won threenational championships. Wednesday’s “Off Campus with Lance Ringler”show is my interview with him. We talked about how basketball used tobe his game and how he had his teams going through physical workoutsbefore Tiger Woods made working out cool for golfers.

Many ofthe 123 players in the field will move on to Div. I golf after nothaving that opportunity out of high school. What a great avenue if youstill want the chance to play college golf at the highest level. Find ajunior college near you … one that has a golf team of course.

Since I’ve spent all day writing about the Georgia program, thoughtI’d go ahead and throw out some thoughts on who will be the next personto lead the Bulldog program.

It’s by far the hottest topic in men’s college golf: The .500 winning percentage rule that will go into play next year.

Justfor fun, I applied the rule to this spring. Let’s examine theBoilermakers of Purdue. Devon Brouse’s squad ended the fall with ahead-to-head record of 24-17 and ranked No. 26 in the country.

Not bad. But Purdue’s spring schedule is brutal.

Purduewent to Florida’s event and finished last (0-13), then to Puerto Rico,an event they host and did not fare much better (3-14). CoastalCarolina’s event was much better (5-13). That little three-tourneystreak produced an 8-40 h-t-h record. Ouch!

But Purdue showedup at an event where it was one of the top two squads and won the18-team Western Intercollegiate. 17-0 and got within striking distanceof the magic .500.

Purdue is clearly a top-50 team and shouldbe in the postseason, but it will have to juggle its schedule big timeto stay away from this sort of scenario next spring. It’s just notworth the chance.

Other teams I feel will have to do the same:Minnesota, Northwestern, Washington, Michigan State and Kentucky. Allthose programs have had success in the past and worked to get aprominent schedule, but will now be forced find some cupcake wins toavoid a losing record.

Good for college golf? That’s not clear.But teams who belong in the postseason will figure out a way to assurea winning record. Which means Purdue’s schedule will have a differentlook next year.
