27.12.2007 | The first day of my new blog on conifers. Trying to figure out how
to structure things... As you can no doubt see my primary interest goes to the group of trees previously grouped as Taxodiaceae. |
17.01.2008 | Here is one nice site for Conifer enthusiasts: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/conif/ |
22.01.2008 | Nice site for details on conifer germination: http://www.sheffields.com and they do sell seeds too. |
A very nice looking middle-sized spruce.
21.01.2008 | Finally got my seeds for this tree after a long search - found on eBay.de in the shop http://www.exotic-samen.de/. Now they have to soak in temperate water for 24 hours, then we shall see. |
22.01.2008 | Today i sowed the seeds in a cocopeat mix (I had some already an the selller recommended it). I sawed after 24 hours soak in temperate water. |
25.01.2008 | Oh horror - mould appeared today on the topsoil. Immediately uncovered the seedtray to ensure air-circulation. |
Not a pine of course. I acquired this rare tree in the summer 2007 from a garden centre in Rostock, North-East Germany. (http://www.groenfingers.de/)
xx.07.2007 | Got the tree back home to Denmark :-) |
xx.10.2007 | First nights with sub-zero temperatures. They claim it will endure -5 Celsius, possibly down to -12. But at -3 the needles started turning yellow so I moved it from the outside to a cold-house. |
27.12.2007 | Checked the tree today and so far it's doing fine in the cold-house. Temperatures in the house at the moment range between +3C and -1C. |
25.01.2008 | Still doing fine :-) |
For once an unusual tree, not native to the British Isles, but with a surprisingly logical name. Acquired the tree some years ago when it was approx. 25cm high. Now it's nearly 60cm. Has endured some quire cold winters and also quite some snow. Some people by the way claim that the A. araucana does not set cones in Denmark. Well, it does. I have seen it at a magnificent tree in Rødovre near Copenhagen. But the cones seem to be sterile. Bought from a danish general nursery - must nurseries in Denmark stock this tree.

Not a pine of course. And one of the few of my trees that I don't keep outside. I did try with another specimen one winter - and - I can testify that the tree does not endure temperatures below 0 Celsius! Bought from a danish general nursery - must nurseries in Denmark stock this tree.
Not a fir of course. Got some really small ones from a French specialist nursery some years ago, and they are thriving outdoors all year. Got a larger specimen from a UK specialist nursery in the autumn 2006 and it thrives as well. This is certainly my favourite tree, very beautiful.

I first tried growing it from seeds - it didn't go well - have a look here: http://sequoia.blog.com/. Got two specimens from a UK specialist nursery in the autumn 2006 and they thrive.
06.01.2008 | Measured to 103cm and the small one to 53cm |

Bought from a danish general nursery. My god - this tree is growing fast...

xx.10.2007 | Moved the tree from neutral soil to slightly more acid soil. |
06.01.2008 | Measured to 100cm |
Bought as a medium-size bonsai from a danish supermarket - replanted as non-bonsai, but not doing too well inside. Maybe I shall try it outside in 2008.
Bought from a danish general nursery in 2004 or 2005. Actually I am not sure it is distichtum because it looks a lot like ascendens, but ascendens is not supposed to be able to grow in Denmark.
Bought from a danish general nursery in 2004.
