CENSUS of ENGLAND and WALES 1911

Bringing them to life in a small way. The occupants of the house filled in the census form themselves in their own handwriting (those who could write, otherwise an enumerator would assist in completing the document)

For the first time on a census (held every 10 years from 1841) the numbers of living children were added even if they had left home, as well as numbers of children that had died. Also the numbers of rooms in the house/dwelling were given. The kitchen also counted as a room!

James MARKHAM (my grandfather)

James and Betsy MARKHAM, children James Herbert and Raymond, 8 North Parade, Ashby, Doncaster (?) Lincolnshire (5 rooms)

This house still exists. I believe this to be Betsy´s handwriting. Doncaster was in the then West Riding of Yorkshire.

Betsy Markhams father - John Jackson CLARK (my great grandfather)

John Jackson and Sarah Maria CLARK, children Edith Amelia and Florence May, 5-3 Screeds, Ashby Via Doncaster, Lincs. (6 rooms) The Screeds has long since disappeared. The handwriting is exactly the same as in the family bible - see e.g the 2 children and compare the handwriting with the census page above.

Son Albert had died in 1891 aged 1.

James Markham´s father - Thomas MARKHAM (my great grandfather)

Thomas and Rebecca MARKHAM, all children had long since left home, and the postal address is given as just Goxhill, Lincs!  (3 rooms). There is some discrepancy as to the number of children for Rebecca is given as 7 and then crossed out. Thomas had 7 children with Mary his first wife. Rebecca married Thomas when she was 36 and a widow, I always thought that she had at least one child.

Lewis Henry BURRELL and Ethel née GILL (my grandfather and grandmother)

Lewis Henry and Ethel had been married for 2 years and there were no children at that time

Edwin BURRELL and Mary Hannah née ROBERTSON (my great grandfather and great grandmother)

Edwin and Mary Hannah had been married for 33 years and there were 2 children living at home at that time - Arthur Charles aged 31 and Elsie aged 12. One interesting fact emerged fom this census was that they had had 8 children in all and 3 had died by 1911. Mabel had died in 1909 aged 16. More research is needed as I suspect that 2 children died at birth - George in 1886 and Maggie in 1887.

They lived at 107 Ecclesall Rd., Sheffield in 1881 and 137 Ecclesall Rd. in 1911. Ecclesall Rd., Sheffield still exists today.

George GILL and Mary Annie née LEES (my great grandfather and great grandmother)

George and Mary Annie had been married for 27 years and they had 12 children in all and in 1911 all were alive and there were still 9 living at home - in 5 rooms! Note that Alice aged 15 was noted as single and Arthur aged 13 was a shop assistant.

Henry ELSOM and Sarah Ann née CLARK  (my great great grandfather and great great grandmother)

Henry Elsom and Sarah Ann living in Elsham. Henry was born there (and died in 1926 aged 90) and Sarah Ann in Worlaby, very close by. Both are buried in the churchyard in Elsham. Harry and Edith were two of the three children that had died by 1911. The total of 11 children is a mystery as I have 12 on the webpage but it does count as they had 11 children together as John Jackson was born before she and Henry married. This is the only census form that we have where the enumerator had signed on behalf of Henry.
