As part of an effort to better acknowledge and celebrate the work of professional historians, the NZHA established the Mary Boyd prize earlier this year. This is awarded to the author of the best article on any aspect of New Zealand history published in a refereed journal between biennial meetings of the NZHA. The judges of the inaugural prize were Dr Felicity Barnes and Professor Margaret Tennant.
The winner was Professor Tony Ballantyne for his article ‘On Place, Space and Mobility in Nineteenth-Century New Zealand’, New Zealand Journal of History, 45, 1, (2011), pp. 50-70.
The judges also highly commended the following two articles:
Kathryn M. Hunter, ‘New Zealand Hunters in Africa: At the Edges of the Empire of Nature’, Journal of Imperial and Commonwealth History, 40, 3 (2012), pp.483-501.
Ondine Godstchalk, ‘A Picture of Health? New Zealand-made Health Education Films 1952-1962’, Social History of Medicine, 25, 1, (2011) pp.122-138.
Results were announced on the evening of 21 November at Otākou Marae following the delivery of the Wiremu Maihi Te Rangikaheke Memorial Lecture by Professor Atholl Anderson, which was a key event in the 2013 Biennial Conference of the NZHA.
The NZHA thanks all those who entered articles for consideration and to the judges for their time and effort in assessing them.
