Pixies Release Four More New Songs on ‘EP-1’

Band tells story of 'Indie Cindy' with video in reverse

“Bagboy” wasn’t the only new song the Pixies had socked away: the influential alt-rockers today released four more as EP-1, along with a video for one of them, “Indie Cindy.”

The latter is a gliding mid-tempo tune that alternates between Black Francis relating a story in biting spoken tones, interrupted by a blazing guitar break, and singing in a sweet, almost dreamy voice on the chorus. The video seems to chronicle a lovers’ triangle that ends badly, and the clip, directed by Lamar + Nik, tells the story in reverse first, then recaps it in forward motion.

The Pixies recorded the four songs on EP-1 in Wales with producer Gil Norton. Though Kim Shattuck recently joined the band as a touring bassist to replace the departed Kim Deal, the bass parts are credited to Ding Archer, while western Massachusetts musician Jeremy Dubs contributed backing vocals to “Another Toe in the Ocean” and “What Goes Boom.”

EP-1, which is the band’s first multi-song release of new material since Trompe le Monde in 1991, is available on the Pixies’ website in MP3 and lossless formats, and as a limited-edition 10-inch vinyl record.
